One of the requirements to advance beyond First Class is serving in a position of responsibility or leadership.  The times are listed below:

First class to STAR Star to LIFE Life to EAGLE
Four (4) months Six (6) months Six (6) months

Serve actively in your troop in one or more of the following positions of responsibility (or carry out a Scoutmaster-approved leadership project to help the troop): Patrol leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Senior Patrol Leader, Troop Guide, Order of the Arrow troop representative, Den Chief, Scribe, Librarian, Historian, Quartermaster, Bugler, Junior Assistant Scoutmaster, Chaplain Aide, Instructor, Webmaster, or Outdoor Ethics Guide. The SPL, ASPLs and leadership team defined active as attending 51% or more of the regular scout meetings.  Also certain positions have additional requirements for attending specific outings. The Positions of Responsibility tracking matrix is accessible here.

Here is a copy of the monthly position of responsibility self-evaluation sheet.  Use this Monthly to get your plan approved and then evaluate how you did compared to your plan.  When you are writing up your goals for the upcoming month, they should be related to your position of responsibility.  So if you say I’m going to start or finish the “XYZ” merit badge, that wouldn’t be relevant.  Your should focus on being Quartermaster or Patrol Leader.  Things that will help you to help the troop be successful.  From a scheduling standpoint, bring your finished sheet for the previous month to the first meeting of the month.  At the same time bring your new sheet for the current month.  That makes it easy for the Scoutmaster to verify that you carried over anything that wasn’t completed from the previous month.  It is important to stay up to date and not fall behind.  Monthly Self-Evaluation Form
